Justin Harty, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Social Work. He earned his doctorate at the University of Chicago and holds dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Chicago. With a background as a licensed clinical social worker and foster care professional in Chicago, Harty’s research focuses on father engagement in child welfare and the experiences of young Black fathers in foster care. Justin Harty is deeply invested in addressing and dismantling systemic racism within the field of social work. He actively incorporates the rich history of Black social work and traditional African self-help and mutual aid traditions into his teachings and research. Harty is dedicated to inspiring social workers to leverage social work history in advancing antiracism and anticolonialism efforts. His research is supported by a VCU Publishing Research Award.
