Milambiling, Joyce Ph.D.

Joyce Milambiling, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita of Languages and Literatures at the University of Northern Iowa. She earned a doctorate in Linguistics from the City University of New York Graduate Center and worked in higher education for over 30 years educating language teachers. In 2019, Milambiling contributed a chapter, “The Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights,” to Language and Social Justice in Practice.

Milambiling’s non-fiction book, Skyscraper Settlement: The Many Lives of Christodora House (2023) was inspired by letters written in 1918 from a student to her teacher at a settlement house in New York City. She is currently working on a novel based on the life of Ellen T. Gould, an enigmatic figure who volunteered teaching English at Christodora House. Joyce Milambiling belongs to the North Carolina Writers Network, the Berkshire Conference for Women Historians, the Association of Historical Writers (based in the UK), and PEN America. Her research is supported by a VCU Publishing Research Award.
